Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal, lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.
Venice has a rich history dating back to 421 AD.
The economy of Venice is heavily reliant on tourism, shipbuilding (mainly done in the neighboring cities of Mestre and Porto Marghera), services, trade, and industrial exports.
Venice weather in January can be quite chilly, with average temperatures ranging between 3°C to 8°C. Despite the cold, there is a certain charm to the city, with fewer tourists and a peaceful, almost surreal atmosphere. Fog can also add a mystical quality to the canals and narrow streets.
The best time to visit Venice is from September to November when tourists desert the city. Although the temperatures range between 3°C and 15°C during this period, Venice is usually peaceful and accommodation prices drop.
