Choquequirao is an archaeological site in southern Peru, similar in structure and architecture to Machu Picchu. It is located in the Vilcabamba mountain range, at an altitude of 3,050 meters above sea level. Known as the 'Cradle of Gold', this remote Inca ruin is a hidden gem offering an incredible trekking experience through lush cloud forests and snow-capped mountains. Rich in history, culture, and stunning natural beauty, Choquequirao provides a less-crowded alternative to its more famous sibling, Machu Picchu.
In December, Choquequirao experiences the summer season. The weather can be warm during the day, with temperatures around 25°C (77°F), while nights can be chilly, dropping to about 10°C (50°F). Rain is fairly common, with frequent showers that rejuvenate the lush vegetation. It is recommended to carry rain gear and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
The best time to visit Choquequirao is during the dry season from April to October when the weather is more stable for trekking. However, visiting in December offers a greener landscape and fewer tourists. Travelers should be prepared for rain and mud on the trails, but the experience is equally rewarding with vibrant flora in full bloom.
